Where does language come from? How does meaning arise from abstract shapes and patterns of light and dark, of color and form? In the Dialogue paintings I explore these questions through the use of marks that are inspired by alphabets and scripts, yet are free of any significance beyond what the viewer imposes on them.
I chose a limited palette of bold colors to accentuate the shapes of the marks themselves. The calligraphic glyphs and the spaces between them invite a conversation with the viewer, between sound and silence, between the sacred and the profane, between language and its opposite. This two-way conversation highlights the power of symbol to both unify and divide. With these marks I aim both to propose a prototype for language and to offer a glimpse into its fundamental expressive limitations.
