Crystallized branches of birch.
After enduring two days of a grueling ice storm that left much of the northeastern US coated with a half-inch or more of ice, we awoke in the morning (with electricity! with heat! with telephone service!) to the glittering clatter of crystal-glazed birch trees swaying in the wind. That same ice that caused hardship for so many had been transformed overnight into an exuberant spray of dazzling light and sound.
